Why Organic? Confessions from a Not-So Green Mama
Tuesday, February 17th, 2009
I have a far road to travel to be considered a green mama; but given the fact I grew up eating Captain Crunch, ring dings, candy bars, and soda-I have come a long way! I used to use my lunch money to buy junk food, I still have a not so secretive addiction to diet coke and processed cookie dough. Recently I gave up diet coke again, which I know I can live without.
My mother is an Italian cook and made dinner every night with a meat, a starch, and a veggie and believes in everything else in moderation. We live similarly with my husband cooking a healthy dinner every night with fresh mostly organic ingredients. I somehow have become a freak about organic dairy items. I don’t really like any dairy items, but my son loves all of them. For some reason, when he started eating cheese, yogurt, and drinking milk; the thought of hormone injected cows totally freaked me out.
This reminds me of a funny story: I was visiting NY staying with my sister and her kids (much older than mine); I went to the store and bought organic milk, cheese, and few other items that are must haves. We are all sitting on the couch, and my nephew says “Mom we need milk.”. I said, “nephew-I just bought a whole gallon of milk for my son.” He said, “Aunt Kim why would I drink that, it’s organic, that’s gross!” I tried to explain to him what organic meant which he had no concept, and it reminded me of me two years before I moved out west. Look at how far I have come.
When my son was born, in a hospital-via c-section ( after 20 hours of labor, 3 hours of pushing, failed forceps) I didn’t have a clue about organic clothing or accessories; it didn’t even cross my mind. I just wanted him to be the best dressed little guy. With my next child, I will dress them in organic clothing, I will continue to work to being more organic, more green, and more eco-conscious.
So, you may or wonder why do I promote organic and eco-conscious clothing and accessories?
1)Purity-Our children our born in the purest state of being, why not have them touchest by pure fabric. There is some much time for a child to be influenced by our world, touched by things not so great, why not keep them pure for as long as possible.
2) For the Health of our Baby-We wear clothing on our skin, our largest organ of our bodies even on our most delicate places, and our children are breathing in the aromas of their clothes. Organic clothing is the safest non-toxic clothing. It is grown without chemicals, pesticides, herbicides, and other posions that can remain in the fabric and cause reactions on our skin and in our bodies. (We use special baby detergent-even me the non-green mama used the special detergent) Also organic clothing uses earth friendly low impact dyes for the least impact on your baby and the environment.
3)Last longer, stay newer looking-Because organic fabrics have not been broken down with chemicals, the fibers are stonger, and this helps organic clothing last longer and look newer longer. Organic fabrics have not been coated with a finish that can wash away making clothes looking old after only a few washings. And we all know how many times baby items are washed and used.
4)Fashionable-organic clothing is NOT the paper bag style anymore. Organic clothing is fun, fashionable, and trendy. In today’s world, people are willing to pay more for organic baby items, so they have to be trendy. There are amazing brands available, that I would offer in my store regardless if they were organic or not.
So we love to hear from moms: Why do you buy organic? Why is it important to you and your baby? We continue to strive to find organic clothing that is fun, fashionable, safe, and pure.
